What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are restorations that serve as permanent replacements for lost teeth. Implant restorations are made of three parts:

  1. The titanium implant is surgically inserted into your jawbone and fuses to it in a process called osseointegration, serving as the foundation for the restoration.
  2. The abutment piece connects the implant to the restoration.
  3. The custom-made restoration, usually a crown, bridge, or denture arch, replaces the lost tooth or teeth.

Your dentist and the rest of Northbridge Dental’s experienced dental team will work with you to identify your unique needs and get you the implant solution that will work best for you.

Why Choose Dental Implant Restorations?

Implant restorations are the go-to method for tooth replacement recommended by most dentists due to the myriad of aesthetic and health benefits they offer. Some of those benefits include the following:

  • Lifelike — Dental implants look, feel, and function, like natural teeth.
  • Stable — Implant restorations will never slip around or fall out of your mouth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
  • Prevents Misalignment — Dental implants return support to your remaining teeth, preventing mesial drift, which occurs when teeth shift out of place towards the front of your mouth, especially when there’s an empty space.
  • Prevents Facial Sagging — Your implant restorations will also restore support to the muscles in your face, preventing premature wrinkles.
  • Prevents Loss of Jawbone Density (Resorption) — Implants mimic the root of a tooth, providing the stimulation your jawbone requires to rebuild itself so it remains healthy and strong.
  • Lasts A Lifetime — With proper oral hygiene and regular dental exams at Northbridge Dental with our skilled dentists, your implant restorations can last 20 years to a lifetime

How Are Dental Implant Restorations Installed?

We know you’re probably eager to restore your smile and take advantage of the many benefits offered by dental implants. To achieve the healthy smile of your dreams, you’ll visit our Alpharetta or Roswell location for a series of appointments over a matter of months. Here’s what you can expect.

Initial Consultation

To determine if you’re a good candidate for dental implant restorations, your dentist will have you attend an initial consultation. During your initial consultation, your dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth, including X-rays, review your medical history, and ask you about your smile goals.

The information your dentist gathers will allow them to determine if implant restorations are right for you. Your dentist is also likely to suggest treating any underlying oral diseases to increase the chances of implant success.

Designing Your Implant Restorations

Once all preliminary treatments are complete and you and your dentist have both decided that implant restorations are right for you, we’ll take digital images of your teeth using the intra-oral camera and we’ll take impressions of your teeth as well. These will be sent to an offsite laboratory, where technicians will use them to design your custom-made implant restorations.

Preparation

To prepare your mouth for your implant restorations, we’ll apply a local anesthetic to the soft tissues around the future surgical site using The Wand® for precise administration. Once we’re sure you’re numb and comfortable, your dentist will perform any necessary tooth extractions and make small incisions into your gums where the implants will go.

Installing Your Dental Implants

Your implants will be inserted into your jawbone through these incisions. You’ll return to either of our locations to have your restorations attached once your implants have fully integrated, a process that takes an average of three to six months

Attaching Your Custom-Made Restorations

When you return to our Alpharetta or Roswell office, your dentist will make sure your custom-made single or multi-tooth restoration is to your liking. If you approve, your dentist will attach the restoration to the titanium implant or implants with abutment pieces. They’ll make sure it fits snugly and comfortably before you leave our office and begin enjoying your fully restored smile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do dental implant restorations cost?

Dental implants tend to cost more than non-implant restorations, due to the long list of aesthetic and health benefits they offer. However, we believe this long list of benefits makes implants well worth it. The exact cost of your implants will depend on numerous factors including how many implants you need and your insurance. Our dentists and the rest of our team at Northbridge Dental encourage you to call your provider beforehand to ask them which costs they cover.

If you’re uninsured or underinsured, don’t worry! We want all of our patients to receive the best dental care so they can enjoy a strong, beautiful smile. Northbridge Dental proudly offers flexible financing options, including third-party financing through CareCredit and LendingClub.

Am I a good candidate for dental implant restorations?

Good candidates for dental implants include non-smokers with healthy gums and sufficient jawbone density who are missing one or more teeth. The ideal candidate should also practice regular oral hygiene and be willing to visit our Roswell or Alpharetta offices at least once every six months for regular dental exams.

If your gums are unhealthy, or your jawbone lacks density, your dentist may recommend supplemental procedures like gum and bone grafting to improve your chances of implant success. Rest assured that your dentist will evaluate your candidacy at your consultation and let you know about all of your options, so you can make a decision that suits your unique oral health needs.

What is the success rate of dental implant restorations?

Dental implant restorations have an average success rate ranging from 95 to 98 percent with a small risk of complications. However, these complications are often easy to treat and exceedingly rare, especially when your dental implant placement is performed by one of the skilled dental professionals at Northbridge Dental.

What should I avoid after my dental implants are installed?

After your implants are installed and you’re waiting for the surgical site to heal, there are certain foods, drinks, and behaviors you should avoid for at least a week to 10 days to ensure the healing process goes smoothly. During this crucial time, be sure to avoid the following:

  • Carbonation
  • Caffeine
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco products
  • Aggressive, excessive rinsing
  • Using straws
  • Spicy foods
  • Hard, brittle foods
  • Brushing with an electric toothbrush
  • Using a water flosser

Your dentist can give you more specific guidelines on foods, drinks, and habits to avoid and how long to avoid them to guarantee you heal properly.
